It’s a new day

In October the Lord told us it was time for some changes.  He had been speaking to us over the previous several months regarding what He wanted in the Shoppe.  First of all He wanted us to move the Teen & Tween section from the second floor to the lower level and then He wanted us to develop a Prayer Closet in the space we vacated.  We knew for a long time about these changes but didn’t know when He wanted it to be done.  One day towards the end of October on a Thursday (our late night) at 4PM with our closing time at 6PM He said “do it now!” I (Jami) began the move making many trips up and down the stairs.  The finished products are wonderful and you need to come see!  In addition to these changes the Liturgical Church Room recieved a new look as well as the Children’s Room the Gallery and the Gathering Room….in short the whole Shoppe got a face lift.  Come by during the holidays and see the decorations and take advantage of the Christmas goodies while they last.

We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and holy New Year!

Tribute to Molly Mizerak

A life well lived a woman well loved!

I don’t remember when we first met Molly but I suspect it was that we met John (her husband) first. When we expanded the store in 1998 we were searching for a Christian printing company. I believe someone connected us with John’s company, then Insty Print. After working with John for a while he told us he was going to send his wife in as she was involved in ministry work and he thought she could secure the materials she needed from us. From this was born a long relationship with Molly as a faithful customer. Molly began to recommend books to people she was ministering to beginning with “Come Away My Beloved.” Whenever Molly recommended a book we knew we would need to get several copies and would be reordering more copies frequently to keep up with the demand. I had the awesome opportunity to pray with Molly and participate in a tea for pastor’s wives and travel to the Culpepper, VA healing rooms several years ago. We became very close friends through our association at the Christian Shoppe.

Fast forward to 2010 when Cheri our other employee and we discussed the need for another part time employee; we all began to pray and then in August of 2010 Cheri’s mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and Cheri was called home to Ohio to care for her and her dad. Dave and I had planned our annual retreat Jersey Shore so we knew we needed to hire and train someone right away. As we prayed the Lord revealed to both Dave’s and my heart that Molly was the person He wanted working here. We presented the idea to Cheri to get her opinion she too was excited. But I kept saying to the Lord “not Molly she’s far too busy to work here”. Meanwhile, Dave felt the Lord wanted us to move forward with the hiring process; so he kept asking me if I had contacted Molly yet. Finally, the Lord convicted me that I was being disobedient and that I should contact her. I sent her an e-mail asking what she thought of the idea. She wrote back almost immediately indicating that she and the family could use the extra money and were wondering where it would come from. Shortly after that initial message we hired Molly and she began work in September.

We’ve been very blessed with the employees the Lord has sent to us over the years and Molly was no exception. She learned very quickly and was able after only a couple of weeks to handle the business with the help of her daughter Jamie and Amy Sabat (a friend of hers and a customer of ours) for a week to allow us to go on our retreat. Molly brought a wealth of business as well as ministry experience and both she and John brought ideas to improve our business. A few months before Molly came on board our Shoppe became the bookstore for Intercessors for America. While this has been a wonderful addition to the Shoppe Dave was the main person who handled all the orders and mailing connected with the operation. He was able to teach Molly who picked up the system he developed and even assisted in instituting several improvements. Over a short period of time she actually took over most of the management of that operation until she received the diagnosis of a brain tumor in February of 2011. Some of the other things that changed when Molly came on board were sitting down for daily prayer before opening the Shoppe. We had become somewhat lax over the last few years and would launch into our work without first sitting down with our Lord. Molly also prayed with our customers who would come in with prayer needs. A few times our customers were surprised when she actually prayed with them immediately. But that was just the way she was.

We have joined Molly’s family and friends from all over the world who have prayed since February for the manifestation of her earthly healing; however God had a different plan in mind and gave her the ultimate healing on June 1st. We will always love her and miss her but we are so blessed that the Lord placed her in our lives and our business. We are excited to see what the Lord will do with her legacy through her family and friends and will be blessed to play whatever part He has ordained for us.

Dassah’s Story

Dear Jesus, We’d like a Dog

December 3, 2009
Dear Jesus,
As You already know, we would very much like to have another dog, but only if this is in accord with Your Will.  Should You desire to bless us with a new friend we would like it to meet the following criteria:

Free
Female
Less than 5 years old
Spaniel
House broken
Crate trained
Good with people and other animals
Black & White
Good Shoppe dog

So these are our desires.  We turn this over to You as You know what is best for us.

For the last 38 years my husband, David, and I have raised and cohabitated with dogs. We’ve owned and loved seven dogs in all.  Our last friends, Chance (a Belgian Shepherd) and Minnie Pearl (a Springer Spaniel) went over the Rainbow Bridge in July of 2009.  We were at an even greater loss as it was the first time we had been without a furry friend in these 38 years.  Since we never had children, our dogs have always meant a lot to us.  Needless to say we were very sad and after month without Chance and Minnie Pearl we began searching for a new friend to rescue. We searched for four months with no success… and then in early December we decided to write a letter to Jesus. He says “Ask and it will be given unto you…” So we asked. We asked exactly and specifically for our hearts desire, wholeheartedly believing that He could answer our prayer, wholeheartedly seeking His will; wholeheartedly knowing if it were in His will, He would answer us.

Three weeks later we heard from our vet’s office. The assistant indicated there was a woman in a neighboring town that had a serious health issue and needed to locate homes for a couple of her dogs.  She had a 4 year old and a 4 month old and both were female.  We called the woman immediately! We had learned from the previous 4 months of searching that female dogs get placed very quickly.  By the time the woman returned our call she had already decided to keep one of the dogs.  Initially, we had thought we wanted the older dog, but just before the woman called we decided it would be refreshing for us to train a puppy. As it turned out it was the puppy she wanted to place. Coincidence or God-incidence?

The day came for us to meet the puppy for the first time. We were very excited but also a little apprehensive because we had suffered some disappointments during our several months of searching.  When we arrived at Melissa’s home she greeted us warmly. Melissa is a breeder so we were able to meet the puppy’s parents, a sibling and her grandmother before meeting her.  Her family was both beautiful and talented. We were even more excited to meet the puppy! Melissa called “Pup, Pup, Pup!” and in raced this tiny black streak.  My eyes focused on her. As I bent down commenting on how small this puppy was she leapt into my arms and began to nuzzle my neck.  My husband commented: “Well, I believe we’ve found the dog we want!”

We asked Melissa what the next step would be. She replied: “If you want her she’s yours!”  We happily accepted her offer. That was over a year and three obedience courses ago.  We named the puppy Hadassah (Hebrew for Joy) Selah (Hebrew for Praise God) and we have been praising God for the incredible joy He bestowed on us ever since that day!  Not only did He answer our request, but He answered each of the criteria we had asked right down to the color of her fur. On first glance Dassah appears to be a black Cocker Spaniel, but when we mentioned to Melissa we had been searching for a black and white dog, she showed us that Dassah had white on her chin, throat and chest! Coincidence? Or God-incidence? We know the answer— it was our answered prayer.

We own a Christian book and gift store in our town and Dassah comes to the store with us every day.  Many of our customers come by just to visit with her.  She entertains everyone with her tricks and general sweet nature.  In the spring of 2011 we plan to begin agility training with Dassah as well as visiting nursing and assisted living facilities. We believe this will be a way for us and Dassah to witness God’s goodness to many people. Just maybe God will reach someone who is lost through Dassah.

This answer to prayer reminds us every day that our God cares about everything in our lives— every little detail we are concerned with He is also… and He indeed gives us the desires of our hearts if we but ask.  All the glory for our precious friend goes to Jesus!

The Last Fall - Book Review - by Jami Dittmeier

The Last Fall, a novel by Jay Blevins.

Eric Stratton had it all…he was young, handsome, held a prestigious position with a leading Washington, D. C. law firm; he had more lady friends than anyone he knew, and was driving his dream car.  Just when he felt the most invincible he passed out in the court room where he was presenting a case.  When he woke up in the emergency room the attending physician told him he didn’t think he was suffering from anything serious but then again he may be suffering from pancreatic cancer…..of course it turned out to be the latter.

Instead of hauling out his bucket list and ticking off everything he had always wanted to do but was too busy with is high powered job and life in the fast lane.  He ponders his life and regrets over the people he has hurt while using their bodies to climb to the top of the ladder.  He decides to spend his last few remaining weeks making amends with seven people on whose lives his despicable actions had wrought egregious pain.

The rest of the book is a testimonial to our Lord’s gracious power of forgiveness and mercy.

As one of the book club members stated: “The book is a caution to all of us to make amends, to love and forgive while we can.”

I couldn’t put the book down and at times I cried my eyes out while at other times I laughed until tears spilled down my cheeks.

The Believer’s Book Club (that regularly meets at The Christian Shoppe) was honored to host the author Jay Blevins in mid February for a candid and lively discussion about how the book came to be written and his future plans of publishing a sequel.  The book received a very high rating from all the book club members.

About the author:

Jason “Jay” Blevins has been published in Celebrate Life Magazine (May-June 2007), Calvary Chapel Magazine (Fall 2008) and Reader’s Digest (Short Humor March 2007).  He was a contributing writer for the new Holy Bible: Mosaic (Tyndale, 2009)

Professionally, Jason spent five years as a defense contractor involved in the War on Terrorism.  His other experiences include time spent working for the Federal Government as an Intel officer and deputy sheriff in the Washington, D.C., metro area.  He has a degree in Christian Ministries and spent over five years working in youth and young adult ministries.

Jay is a husband and father of three amazing children.  When he’s not writing or spending time with his loved ones, he loves hiking, camping, fishing and canoeing.

The Christian Shoppe currently has several copies of Jay’s book available in the fiction section.

Gulf Oil Fiasco Revisited

Our post to this blog in June questioned why no one had thought to turn to the Lord to stem the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. We urged our readers to pray for the oil to be turned off. As we write this the oil well has been capped and oil has ceased flowing into the Gulf. Now the news accounts are reporting that the oil that had been spilled is no where to be found. The hundreds of fishing boats contracted to pick up the oil are sitting idle. The oil is not on the surface, nor has it reached any beaches or wetlands. Where did it go? Has no one thought that perhaps the Lord got rid of it? Praise God for another miracle in our midst even if the news reporters don’t want to report it or admit it.

Gulf Oil Fiasco

We are now over 40 days since the oil platform in the gulf exploded and sank. All the attempts to stop the leaking oil have been unsuccessful. Why? Because MAN is trying to fix it with human effort. Don’t you think that maybe it’s time to turn to GOD to stop the leak? After all it’s His oil. “Heavenly Father, You are the Creator of all things and were gracious to give us dominion over the earth. Abba, we messing up the place really bad and need Your help. Please stop the oil flow in the Gulf of Mexico. We humbly ask this in the Name of Your Son, Jesus”. Amen

New restrictions on nuclear weapon

Today the Obama administration announced that the United States will swear off the development of new generations of nuclear weapons and will not use its existing arsenal to attack nonnuclear states. The new policy “recognizes that the greatest threat to U.S. and global security is no longer a nuclear exchange between nations, but nuclear terrorism by violent extremists and nuclear proliferation to an increasing number of states,” Obama said later in a statement. So what he is saying is that Iran, North Korea, and China are no longer nuclear threats? As we give up our nuclear weapons and vow not develop new ones, pretty soon the only nations who will have nuclear weapons are the ones who intend to use them.

Health Care - An Open Letter to Our Elected Officials

Dear Senators Webb and Warner, and Representative Wolf,

We are writing to inform you of our opposition to the current health care debate and proposed health care legislation. From polls we have seen over 60% of the American people are opposed to any change in health care. We are members of this majority.

We agree that affordable health care should be available to all Americans, but any legislation must retain the current policy against federal funding of abortions, include full conscience protection, and be free of the multitude of “pork provisions” and behind closed door deals.

Our Catholic faith tells us that our support for the dignity of life includes access to affordable health care. This support, however, cannot come at the expense of the respect for life at all stages, from natural conception to natural death.

It is time that you begin to listen to your constituents and not your party leadership.

If health care legislation is to come to pass, please consider scraping this current initiative and starting over. We believe the Congress should be moving on with the business of the country. The economy, employment, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the protection from terrorism are far more important, in our opinion, than this health care debacle.

Sincerely,

Jami & Dave Dittmeier

Pro-Choice?

The pro-choice advocates are in a tiz over a proposed ad to be aired during the Super Bowl. The ad, which we have not seen, features Tim Tebow and his mother, who opted not to abort her child during a crisis pregnancy, even after the recommendations of her doctors. The pro-choice folks are claiming that the ad is a pro-life advertisement, thus political in nature and do not want it shown.

The pro-choice folk’s true colors are once again being displayed. They are only pro-choice if the choice is to abort a child. Mrs. Tebow had a choice, she opted not to abort. So instead of criticizing, the pro-choice folks should be cheering. Mrs. Tebow did EXACTLY what they have been advocating — she made a choice. It just wasn’t the choice they wanted. So in reality the pro-choice folks are not really pro-choice, they are in fact pro-death because in their distorted view that is the only choice.
